These placemats are hand-woven from banana palm leaf by the members of one family in Bali. The women in this family collect and dry the palms then take over a week to make one set of coasters in between cooking and tending to their children.
Although they are strikingly similar in style to the tribal-patterned baskets from Africa, the woven motifs in these coasters are unique to the Indonesian archipelago and originate from the island of Papua, west of Bali. Which just goes to show that we are all connected in this small world through our culture and history.
